Volunteers

The event organization is looking for about 500 volunteers for various officiating and event roles. Below you will find the volunteer roles needed for the event and their descriptions. The tasks are divided into areas related to competition arrangements, construction, event support services, customer and VIP services, communication and media services, and security and transportation services.

You can sign up as a volunteer for the entire event or for a shorter period. As a volunteer, you will receive a dedicated outfit and a certificate for the completed tasks. Additionally, if your workday is over 5 hours, you will be provided with a meal.

Competition Operations

The recommended age range for competition operations is 18-70 years, although flexibility can be applied for specific tasks. The minimum age for basket carriers is 10 years and for messengers 15 years.
Language skills: For most tasks, Finnish is sufficient, but knowledge of other languages is an advantage.

Technical Information Center (TIC / Competition Office)

This team receives athlete and relay team confirmations, handles protests, inspects personal throwing equipment, and answers team inquiries. A good understanding of competition operations, the competition organization, and key personnel is required for this role. Fluency in both Finnish and English is required. Other languages are an advantage.

Call Room

Officials supervise athletes moving from the warm-up area to the competition arena. They check athletes’ identities and ensure that their implements complies with the rules before entering the competition area. Athletes are then guided to their designated competition spots according to the schedule. Fluency in both Finnish and English is required. Other languages are an advantage.

Competition Operations / Track and Field Events

Tasks include implement retrieval, bar raising, sand leveling, track monitoring, hurdle setup, etc. Officials handle both track and field events as part of a team led by the event leader. Good qualities for an official include common sense, general etiquette, and focused attention to tasks. Referees working inside the stadium must hold at least a Level 2 technical official training or have extensive experience as officials in competitions. If you don’t have a Level 2 technical official training or want to familiarize yourself with the latest rules, we will offer a technical official training in March-May, which we recommend for all referees.

Result Service / Messengers

In result services, messengers input results into the results software according to the records and ensure that the results from the finish line camera have been received. Messengers also handle copying and delivering records, start lists, and results to the right locations.

Technical Team / Implement Inspectors

Implement inspectors, under the supervision of technical directors, check the compliance of implements brought by competitors, make necessary markings on the implements, and fill out inspection forms. Implement inspectors also ensure that implements are delivered to the competition site on time and collected after the event. Personal implements are then delivered to the competition office for pickup. Fluency in both Finnish and English is required. Other languages are an advantage.

Marshall Team (Field Security)

The security team for the field ensures that unauthorized individuals do not enter the area, removes extra personnel, and monitors the safe execution of events.

Basket Carriers

Basket carriers are responsible for transporting athletes’ equipment from the start location to the finish area. This role is particularly suited for energetic young athletes (minimum age 10 years).

 

Logistics

Transportation

Transportation tasks include driving official event personnel and guests between the competition hotels and the stadium using the event’s vehicles, as well as organizing rides at the transportation office. Local knowledge is considered an advantage.
Special requirement: A valid driver’s license is required, and ideally, at least 2 years of driving experience.

Hotel Information

The official competition hotels host domestic and international athletes, as well as team members. Hotel information volunteers assist with questions related to the competition and the city. This role requires good organizational skills, interpersonal skills, and knowledge of the city and languages.

Café Sales

Café volunteers are responsible for selling products and preparing food items for sale.

Technical Support

Technical support ensures the proper functioning of competition venues’ technology, ICT operations, and cabling in collaboration with the city.

Training Field

Volunteers are needed at the Pyynikki training field to ensure that the field is operational, equipment is available, and general venue functionality is maintained.

Construction

Tasks include construction, decoration, signage, and deconstruction. The role requires an energetic, hands-on attitude and manual skills. Prior to the event, volunteers will build advertisement fences, podiums, and other athlete areas. Post-event, the team is responsible for dismantling structures.

 

Security

Security, Crowd and Traffic Control

Tasks include controlling access to the event and ensuring safety. You understand the importance of safety measures and instructions for the smooth running of the event and customer satisfaction. You are customer-oriented, language-skilled, and have a proactive attitude.

Crowd control duties require good situational awareness and following instructions. A security officer license and previous experience are beneficial but not mandatory.

Traffic control direct traffic and monitor access permissions for vehicles arriving at the event area.

Audience Guidance

Audience guides help spectators find their assigned seats and assist with any questions they may have.

 

Administration

Accreditation

The accreditation center serves official event participants and invitees with access cards. Tasks include customer service and the printing of accreditation cards. Accuracy, customer service skills, and language skills are required for this position.

Volunteer Center

The volunteer center is where volunteers are welcomed, uniforms are distributed, and all communication regarding volunteers during the event is handled. The center also serves as a resting and meeting place for volunteers. You will ensure that volunteers are well taken care of before and during the event. Tasks include coordinating volunteer equipment, meals, and maintaining volunteer spaces (refilling supplies, making coffee, cleaning). This role requires proactivity and a positive attitude.

 

Marketing

Sponsors & Promotion

Implementing tasks in line with sponsor agreements, such as distributing brochures, setting up and staffing promotional stands, etc.
You can join the marketing team as early as spring 2025.

Ticket Sales

Ticket sellers sell tickets at the entrances and distribute tickets for VIPs and invitees. This role requires excellent customer service skills and the ability to handle pressure in a busy environment, as well as fluency in both Finnish and English.

Event Square

Staffing the partner stands and the organizer’s own stands and possibly assisting with sales activities. You should be fluent in both Finnish and English, and additional language skills are an advantage.

 

Awards & VIP Guests

Awards Ceremony

Guide and assist with tasks related to the awards ceremony. Fluency in both Finnish and English is required. Additional language skills are an advantage.

VIP Guests

VIP volunteers are responsible for ensuring the smooth operation of the VIP area and assisting with guest instructions. The VIP area must remain tidy, and volunteers assist VIP service providers when needed. You will shine in this role if you have excellent customer service and language skills, particularly with both Finnish and international guests. Fluency in both Finnish and English is required. Additional language skills are an advantage.

Special Requirement: You must be at least 18 years old.

Opening and Closing Ceremonies

We are also looking for volunteers for various support roles during the opening and closing ceremonies.

 

Media & Communication

Press Center

The press center is used by journalists and photographers. The press center opens 2 days before the first competition day and is open 2 hours before the first event and at least 3 hours after the last event each competition day.

Mixed Zone Coordinator

The Mixed Zone is where athletes meet the media after completing their events. This area hosts TV and other media interviews. The Mixed Zone Coordinator ensures smooth operation with the help of 1-2 assistants.

Flash Quotes Team

The Flash Quotes team works in the Mixed Zone, conducting quick interviews with the winners of finals and sending them to the European Athletics for publication. The team needs individuals fluent in English, with at least one person speaking Spanish or German. Familiarity with athletics terminology is beneficial, as is previous experience as a journalist.

Head of Photography Assistant

1-2 individuals to assist the head of photography during the competition.

Media Assistants

Media assistants help direct media representatives, ensuring they have the necessary information such as WiFi access, start lists, and results. The role requires customer service skills and language proficiency. The candidate should understand the needs of the working media. Fluency in both Finnish and English is required, and additional language skills are an advantage.

Social Media Team

The social media team assists with updating the event’s social media accounts. This role requires excellent skills in managing social media apps, attention to detail, and good written communication in both Finnish and English.

 

Medical Services

First Aid

First aid ensures that injured athletes receive assistance as quickly as possible and assesses the need for further treatment. We handle minor injuries, strains, and ensure proper hydration.
The first aid team for the competition seeks:
– Individuals with a valid EA2 or similar first aid course and experience in event-based medical roles
– Doctors, nurses, emergency medical technicians, physiotherapists, and first responders
Applicants must be over 18 years old.

Anti-Doping Assistance

Anti-doping assistants escort athletes to doping tests. Fluency in English is required, and knowledge of other languages is an advantage. Applicants must be over 18 years old.
