Pispala & Pispala Ridge
Stretching from Pyynikki to Pispala’s picturesque neighbourhood, this ridge area is known for its narrow streets, stunning city views, and historical landmarks such as the famous Pispala Stairs and the poet Lauri Viita’s home. Nokia Arena
One of Tampere’s newest landmarks, Nokia Arena is an architectural masterpiece designed by renowned American architect Daniel Liebeskind. While it’s best known as the home of Tappara and Ilves ice hockey teams, the venue hosts various events throughout the year, capacity up to 15,000 people. Preparations for the European Athletics U20 Championships reach a milestone on April 29th, marking just 100 days until the event. The championships will take place in Tampere from August 7th to 10th.

– This means that all the arrangements for the championships are starting to take shape. Now, we are refining the details of the plans. Everything will surely be ready for the teams, spectators, and media when the championships begin, says Elisa Hakanen, the General Secretary of the event.

– We want to offer an unforgettable athletics event for both athletes and spectators.

The first official competition day of the event is August 7th, but the opening ceremony will be held day before.

– The opening ceremony will take place on Wednesday, August 6th, right next to Tampere Stadium, at the square of the Ratina Shopping Centre, Hakanen explains.

1,800 Preliminary Entries, Stadium gets a new Mondo surface

The U20 European Championships will bring athletes from nearly all European countries to Tampere.

– The Preliminary Entries have already closed. Based on these, 1,800 athletes and team members are expected to participate, but the final number will be confirmed on July 28th when the Final Entry ends, Hakanen says.

The competition will be held at the atmospheric Tampere Stadium, which has previously hosted the U20 and U23 European Championships and the U20 World Championships in athletics.

– The Stadium has been complimented for its great atmosphere in all major competitions. I believe that the experienced and supportive Finnish audience will find their way to the stands this time as well. The competitions will take place on a completely renewed Mondo surface, Hakanen adds.

Finnish Team announced at the and of July

July 28th will also be an exciting day for Finland, as the Finnish team will be selected. Among the anticipated Finnish names for the championships are Enni Virjonen, Aatu Kangas, Mico Lampinen, Mila Heikkonen, and Juho Venäläinen.

– Athletes from Finland’s team will visit Tampere in June to familiarize themselves with the venue. As a rehearsal event for the championships, the Motonet GP competition will be held at Tampere Stadium on July 23rd, featuring top domestic and international athletes, Hakanen says.

– Throughout the summer, updates about the event preparations and other related matters will also be shared on social media with the hashtags #u20tampere2025 and #tampere2025.

Ticket sales for the championships are ongoing. Daily tickets and four-day passes covering the entire event are available. Tickets are not assigned to specific seats, allowing spectators to change their location during the day based on the events they wish to watch. Children under seven years old can attend for free.

The City of Tampere warmly invites all top athletes and sports fans to attend the European Athletics U20 Championships at Tampere Stadium from August 7th to 10th, 2025.

Plans for the upcoming U20 Championships are advancing at full speed: ticket sales are open, volunteer recruitment has begun, and Tampere Stadium’s new Mondo surface is expected to be completed by late May or early June. Tampereen Pyrintö, in collaboration with European Athletics, will serve as the organizing club for this youth European championships.

Tampere is stepping out of winter’s shadow into the flourishing spring. All eyes are already on this summer’s top sports events: the European Athletics U20 Championships, the Disc Golf World Championships, the IVV Olympiads, and the FIBA EuroBasket group stage featuring Finland.

Tampereen Pyrintö, in collaboration with the Finnish Athletics and the City of Tampere, is organizing the U20 European Athletics Championships. The competition will take place from Thursday to Sunday, 7-10 August 2025, at the Tampere Stadium.

The event is looking for enthusiastic volunteers to contribute to a successful and memorable international event with participants from up to 49 countries. Over 1000 athletes and 500 team members will take part in the championships.

The volunteer application for the U20 European Championships is now open. A wide range of tasks are available, including roles in logistics, sales, information points, construction, communication, and security. More information about the tasks and their descriptions can be found here. Depending on the task, you could get involved already in spring!
