100 days until the European U20 Championships at Tampere – Offering an unforgettable athletics experience

29.04.2025

Preparations for the European Athletics U20 Championships reach a milestone on April 29th, marking just 100 days until the event. The championships will take place in Tampere from August 7th to 10th.

– This means that all the arrangements for the championships are starting to take shape. Now, we are refining the details of the plans. Everything will surely be ready for the teams, spectators, and media when the championships begin, says Elisa Hakanen, the General Secretary of the event.

– We want to offer an unforgettable athletics event for both athletes and spectators.

The first official competition day of the event is August 7th, but the opening ceremony will be held day before.

– The opening ceremony will take place on Wednesday, August 6th, right next to Tampere Stadium, at the square of the Ratina Shopping Centre, Hakanen explains.

1,800 Preliminary Entries, Stadium gets a new Mondo surface

The U20 European Championships will bring athletes from nearly all European countries to Tampere.

– The Preliminary Entries have already closed. Based on these, 1,800 athletes and team members are expected to participate, but the final number will be confirmed on July 28th when the Final Entry ends, Hakanen says.

The competition will be held at the atmospheric Tampere Stadium, which has previously hosted the U20 and U23 European Championships and the U20 World Championships in athletics.

– The Stadium has been complimented for its great atmosphere in all major competitions. I believe that the experienced and supportive Finnish audience will find their way to the stands this time as well. The competitions will take place on a completely renewed Mondo surface, Hakanen adds.

Finnish Team announced at the and of July

July 28th will also be an exciting day for Finland, as the Finnish team will be selected. Among the anticipated Finnish names for the championships are Enni Virjonen, Aatu Kangas, Mico Lampinen, Mila Heikkonen, and Juho Venäläinen.

– Athletes from Finland’s team will visit Tampere in June to familiarize themselves with the venue. As a rehearsal event for the championships, the Motonet GP competition will be held at Tampere Stadium on July 23rd, featuring top domestic and international athletes, Hakanen says.

– Throughout the summer, updates about the event preparations and other related matters will also be shared on social media with the hashtags #u20tampere2025 and #tampere2025.
